I have just blown in from the Windy City of Chicago where I attended an inspirational church conference with engaging leaders and dynamic presentation and discussion about the ever expanding tapestry of the church. Leaders, both pastoral and lay, were encouraged towards bridge building and friendships, and given expansive views of mission and service outside the walls of the sanctuary along with practical tools for implementing vision. I am so grateful for these experiences that rejuvenate the soul.
In my absence I learned as many of you did that our organist, Lee Massie’s mother passed away on Sunday as we were holding her in our prayers as she entered her final days. We will continue to surround Lee with our support and love and prayers for the days to come. He will return to worship on Palm Sunday at the end of the month. Please call 714-637-7660 or email firstname.lastname@example.org the church office for his address if you would like to send cards and messages of care.
Additionally, I was contacted by our dear partner in Mexico, Pastor Lupe, and learned that several homes in his neighborhood were consumed by a rapidly moving fire that has left at least 4 families homeless. In response to this locale disaster he has asked our congregation to pray and to assist these families by constructing 3 small 12×12 homes instead of one 12×20 home during our trip beginning March 27. This will stretch our workforce and our materials but I feel confident that we can meet this emerging need through the support of our congregation. We can use everyone’s help in several areas:
- Workers: extra hands are always appreciated, please contact our church office if you can join the team either 2 days, 4 days or all 5 days beginning March 27.
- Donations: we will need to purchase additional materials for the houses so all contributions are appreciated, small, medium, or grande!
- Prayers: we covet your prayers for our workers and their safety and for the families we will serve. And we can use more prayer partners so join us in the fellowship hall following worship this Sunday for your assignment.
I am so grateful for our talented worship leaders such as Alan Purvis who shared an inspiring sermon last week. I am very much looking forward to worship this Sunday with our family of faith as we continue to explore our season of Lent through the prophet Jeremiah 31:31-34 and the Gospel according to John 12:20-33 as God’s laws shall be written upon our hearts. Worship will be followed with an opportunity to meet and greet your deacon on the patio!
As a reminder the Celebration of Life for our brother, Bob Lamar, will be on Saturday, March 21 at 2 PM in our sanctuary. A reception in the fellowship hall will follow.
In His Service,
Rev. Lissa Smith
